{"id":1272,"date":"2026-08-19T21:01:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T04:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doublethink.institute\/?post_type=mejles-20&#038;p=1272"},"modified":"2026-08-19T21:01:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T04:01:50","slug":"widely-read-news-site-promotes-irgc-founders-interests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resanegar.com\/en\/widely-read-news-site-promotes-irgc-founders-interests\/","title":{"rendered":"Widely Read News Site Promotes IRGC Mainstay\u2019s Interests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s most visited news website, Tabnak, prides itself on \u201canalyzing and interpreting political, social, economical and cultural issues in a neutral manner.\u201d But an investigation into the organization\u2019s corporate structure shows how the state-funded outlet exists primarily to advance the private interests of Mohsen Rezaei, Tabnak\u2019s owner, whose served as the top commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from 1981 to 1997.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public records also show at least six friends and relatives of Rezaei hold executive positions at Tabnak Institute, the website\u2019s publisher. Additionally, most of these six affiliates hold prominent political positions in the Majles, Iran\u2019s parliament, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/tehranbureau.com\/doublethink\/mejles-20\/irgc-founder-rezaei-grips-irans-executive-branch\/\">Expediency Council<\/a>.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tabnak Executives\u2019 Relations to Mohsen Rezaei<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-network\" data-src=\"visualisation\/1865426\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/1865426\/embed\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One former Tabnak board member, Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Ahmadi, is connected by marriage to both Rezaei and former Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.<a href=\"https:\/\/tehranbureau.com\/doublethink\/?post_type=mejles-20&amp;p=1215&amp;preview=true&amp;_thumbnail_id=1269\"> Our reporting<\/a> has shown that Ahmadi has used his connection to both the Qalibaf and Rezaei families to secure various positions in Shahr Bank, a $500 million financial institution owned by the Tehran municipality.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Qalibaf stepped down as mayor in 2017, Ahmadi was removed from the board of Bank-e Shahr but quickly regained his position through intense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikrofonnews.com\/%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%B4%D8%A7%DA%AF%D8%B1%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%85%D9%88%D8%B9%D9%87-%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%A8%D9%82\/\">lobbying<\/a>, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mahdieh_golroo\/status\/1028366495091445761\"> tweets <\/a>by Iranian journalists. At the time, Tabnak ran a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabnaktehran.ir\/fa\/news\/601977\/%D8%B1%D8%B4%D8%AF-%D8%B2%DB%8C%D8%B1%D9%BE%D9%88%D8%B3%D8%AA%DB%8C-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AF-%D8%AD%D8%B3%DB%8C%D9%86%DB%8C-%D9%85%DA%A9%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%85-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B1%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86\">story<\/a> accusing the new team at the Tehran municipality of corruption and \u201cmafia tactics\u201d for trying to replace Ahmadi.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yellow Journalism<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its popularity, Tabnak lacks the journalistic prestige of other prominent state-run websites such as Fars or Tasnim.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTabnak\u2026enjoys the most site visits, but doesn\u2019t mean that it has influence in the political environment or even journalism. Their yellow style of journalism is part of the reason they have the most visitors,\u201d a prominent Iranian business reporter told Doublethink on condition of anonymity, referencing Tabnak\u2019s gossipy clickbait content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these shortcomings, the organization is well-financed through public funds administered by the Culture Ministry. \u201cPoliticians don\u2019t like to use their own money when they have access to government funds,\u201d the reporter said. \u201cThey pay their staff, because nobody would work for them otherwise. They don\u2019t have first-class journalists, partly because those journalists like to be in a freer, more professional environment. And certainly the most important and top-ranked jobs are for the closest friends and relatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Complete Network of Mohsen Rezaei<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-hierarchy\" data-src=\"visualisation\/2121905\" data-url=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/2121905\/embed\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <strong>Who\u2019s <\/strong>W<strong>ho of Tabnak News<\/strong><br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mohsen Rezaei\u2019s only surviving son, <strong>Ali<\/strong>, is the Board Chairman of Tabnak Institute.<\/li><li><strong>Rouhollah Raisi Nafchi<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>Mohsen Rezaei\u2019s oldest son-in-law,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hamshahrionline.ir\/news\/83244\/%DA%AF%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%85-%D9%BE%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%88-%D8%AA%DA%A9%D9%84%DB%8C%D9%81%D8%AA-%D8%B1%D8%A7-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%87-%D8%A7%DB%8C\"> is<\/a> a state prosecutor and inspector. He was vice chairman of Tabnak Institute from 2013.<\/li><li><strong>Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Ahmadi, <\/strong>who is related to both the Qalibaf family and Mohsen Rezaei, has served on the boards of Shahr Bank and its subsidiaries, as well as Tabnak News website. He has held the position of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ensafnews.com\/149964\/%D8%AF%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%87%D9%85%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D9%82%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%85-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%85%D8%B9-%D8%AA%D8%B4%D8%AE%DB%8C%D8%B5-%D9%85\/\">executive deputy<\/a> of the <strong>Expediency Council<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Rezaei\u2019s daughter<strong> Mahdiyeh Rezaei Mirqaed <\/strong>is a partner in Tabnak Institute and sits on the board of Baqiyatallah International Bonyad with her brother.<\/li><li><strong>Seyyed Morteza Alavi <\/strong>has held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asriran.com\/fa\/news\/442404\/%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A8%DB%8C%D9%85%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%A7\">positions<\/a> such as Media Advisor, Comms Director General and PR Expert at the Expediency Council. He left this position to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asriran.com\/fa\/news\/442404\/%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%A8%DB%8C%D9%85%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%A7\">become<\/a> advisor to the CEO and PR and marketing supervisor at Ma Insurance Co., which is owned by Bank Mellat, in 2016.\u00a0Alavi is also the CEO of Tabnak institute, and Board Chairman of Mondir Iron and Steel Industries, which are co-owned by\u00a0Baqiyatallah International Bonyad. There are no public records of Mondir Iron and Steel Industries until 2016, when it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minews.ir\/fa\/doc\/news\/31664\">signed<\/a> a 1 billion Euro contract with TENOVA, an Italian Company.<\/li><li><strong>Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi,<\/strong> the father of Sayyed Morteza, is the Intelligence Minister of both Rouhani Administrations and has been a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.president.ir\/fa\/president\/cabinet\">parliament<\/a> in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Majles. He is currently a member of the Assembly of Experts, which appoints the Supreme Leader. He is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qudsonline.ir\/news\/2588\/%D8%AD%D8%B6%D9%88%D8%B1-%D9%81%D8%B1%D8%B2%D9%86%D8%AF-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%B1%DA%A9%D8%B2%DB%8C-%D8%AC%D8%A8%D9%87%D9%87-%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%AF%DA%AF%DB%8C\">Head of the Supreme Council<\/a> of the Resistance Front of Islamic Iran, Mohsen Rezaei\u2019s political party.<\/li><li><strong>Karam Reza Piryayi <\/strong>is listed as a partner in Tabnak Institute. Like most in Rezaei\u2019s close circle of friends, Piryayi held several positions in the Expediency Council. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/fa\/news\/1393\/07\/30\/536944\/%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%85-%D8%B1%D8%B6%D8%A7-%D9%BE%DB%8C%D8%B1%DB%8C%D8%A7%DB%8C%DB%8C-%D8%AF%D8%A8%DB%8C%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B9-%D8%B1%D8%B3%D8%A7%D9%86%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%85%D8%B9-%D8%AA%D8%B4%D8%AE%DB%8C%D8%B5-%D9%85%D8%B5%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%AA-%D8%B4%D8%AF\">appointed<\/a> as Secretary of Notifications Council and advisor to the Secretary of the Expediency Council in 2014. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siasatmadar.com\/politicians\/karam-reza-piryaei\">became<\/a> head of the Expediency Council\u2019s advisers and headed the<a href=\"http:\/\/arjanews.ir\/?p=56025\"> Luristan Province Elites<\/a> desk at the Expediency Council in 2016.\u00a0Piryayi also <a href=\"http:\/\/arjanews.ir\/?p=3791\">served<\/a> as the governor of Hamadan and Qom provinces. He was head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB)\u00a0in Ilam and Kurdistan Provinces. He has served as the board member, treasurer and inspector of the Islamic Republic\u2019s Governors\u2019 Council.
